Today I am going to share a few tips I have learned over the years about photographing children. Kids can sometimes be very hard to get pictures of but here are a few things to help your pictures turn out a little better!
1. Focus on the eyes
The subject's eyes should be the main focus of the picture, so when you are focusing your camera, make sure you are focusing it on the eyes.
2. Get down at the child's level
Many times a picture will look better if you get down at the same level as the child. When I took this picture of the baby crawling I was sitting on the ground so I could be at the same level as him.
3. Shoot in the evening or full shade
Shooting in the bright daylight can be a challenge so try shooting in the evening or in full shade. You do not want to shoot in shade that is "spotty" because it will make bright sun spots on your subject that do not look good.
4. Follow the child around
Kids can be very hard to pose. If you are photographing a child that does not want to sit still and look at the camera, then let them go where they want and follow them around. They do not need to be looking at the camera in every picture.
5. Try different angles
I mentioned before to get down at a child's level, but trying different angles can be great too. In this picture I was standing on a small stool and had the child look up at me.
Remember that these are just tips to try but they might not work in every situation. In photography, rules are made to be broken. Experiment with different things next time you take pictures of a child and see what you like best. The most important thing you can be doing is taking pictures! You will get better and better over time and with practice.
